We have been receiving updates from Japan about the washi producing areas currently being hit hard by snowfall. Yukyu-shi (known as snow bleached paper) is produced in a very remote area, their process relying on the cold and snow. This year they had been hit by 3m of snow fall, unfortunately making it impossible for Hiromi to visit during her recent Kyoto trip.
We recently re-ordered more Hosho Professional, which is made in Fukui prefecture by one papermaker only. This papermaker is over 80 years old and the paper already takes a long amount of time to make. Due to the great snow falls in the area, production has stopped for him and many papermakers in the area.
We try our best to keep papers well-stocked here in our Santa Monica location, but sometimes nature may just get in the way!
